Christmas Spoiler

So today in Relief Society we had a great lesson on the "Reason for the Season". Bringing in more focus of the Savior rather than the commercial aspects of receiving gifts, etc. One family told their two oldest (8 and 6) (because they told the mom, Santa will bring us new stuff if you take away our other toys)
SPOILER AHEAD: Santa does not really exsist. (sorry if you didn't already know that). I was a little skeptical that would work and thought it would only cause massive amounts of tears, etc from my own children. We've already seen 2 Santa stand-ins in the past two days. One at Lea's school and the other at our ward activity Saturday night. Well I wasn't going to reveal Santa's secret idenity if I didn't have too but I thought I would try it - so this is how it went down:

Lea: Mom I need knee-pads because I don't have any and I don't need them for my bike. (She thinks I can read her mind and understand what that means.....)

Me: Why do you need knee-pads then? (I actually thought she was talking about for volleyball.....wrong.)

Lea: Because I want a scooter.

Me: Who's going to bring you a scooter?

Lea: Santa.

Me: Maybe you should ask Grandma for one.

Lea: (shaking her head) No Santa will bring one to me because that's what I asked him for.

Me: Ummmm, is Santa real or a make-believe person? (I actually asked her twice because she was pondering that statement)

Lea: (grinning) Make believe.

Me: Can he bring you presents if he's a make-believe person?

Lea: No. (no tears and still grinning because it seems silly to ask a make believe person to bring you a gift.)

Me: better ask someone else for that scooter. :)
(and away she went......) YEAH!

Not long ago Elise asked if Santa was real or not. She was concerned because he is so old that he might die soon and she really needed to get everything out of him that she could before he was gone! Though she did tell me Santa was bringing her a great surprise this year. She wouldn't tell me what it was on account that if she did I wouldn't be surprised! Santa at the ward Christmas party told me though - no problem, she was already getting it!

hmmmmmm interesting..... so does she get excited at all about santa still?? i'm on the other end of the spectrum... i was never "told" that santa doesn't exist... i figured it out, but then i also figured out that believing in santa made my christmas a lot more exciting and fun--so to this day, i believe in santa.
now nikki has discussed this with me a couple of times, and i'm not going to be the one to say-santa's not real- but i say things like- our christmas wouldn't be as much fun if we didn't believe in santa would it?- if she flat asked me if santa was real, we'd have a different conversation, but if she's going to stick with "do you believe" i give a wholehearted YES! :o)

i know she'll figure it out here in a year or two--but i LOVE the anticipation/mystery/build up of christmas, the idea of santa is very real/fun for me :o) i'm a big kid i guess :o)

however-on the other hand, we have a wonderful tradition thanks to my mother in law, that for the whole 25 days of december leading to christmas, we have a scripture, song and story to read as a family--that really help us remember Christ. and that has become one of my favorite parts of christmas as well--it brings a much needed step back from all the stresses of life :o)

and since i'm applying for mother of the year :o) in liberty's letter to santa this year she wrote: "dear santa--i hope you had a good summer, please get me whatever Jesus wants me to have. love liberty" lol :o) so i think we're getting there lol :o)
