Something to work on

I borrowed the following post from http://mymixofsix.blogspot.com/ (She has the cutest red-head kids - love it!) Something I am willing to try because I say NO alot!!

We Don't Say NO

My sister Tanya and I have talked about this one quite a few times.  I think we had the same professor in college who taught this concept.  I never forgot his lecture and rarely use the word "no" with my family.  Well, over the weekend a mom approached me after watching me with the little girls and I got into this conversation with her and thought I would share the concept.

"No" is overly used in our society.  It is a negative word and brings immediate reproach to it.  We hear this one word WAYYY more than any other word in our vocabulary.  When our children ask a question to which we quickly reply NO, they then whine and ask WHY not?  Shouldn't we just start out with the reasoning since we are going to have to give it in the end.  If we start out with the reason, we are on a positive note and aren't immediately negative.
Let me explain with a few examples.

*At a store, and one of the kids are crying for a toy.  Instead of the no, No, NO with a scene ensuing, I usually say, "Oh that does look fun maybe we can get that for your birthday".  That puts a smile on their face thinking of getting it in the future and gives me an idea of what they are into and liking.

*Just ate breakfast, "Mom can I have a cookie?"  Instead of a NO with a fight I just tell them WHEN they can have a cookie.  "We just had breakfast.  Let's save those for dessert at lunchtime."  Immediately it's positive because they are going to get a cookie at some point and don't need to put up a fight to the "No" word.

* They want a friend to come over.  Instead of NO not today, just do the reason why, without the No.  "We have soccer practice today and will be really busy can we do it ...."  or just whatever your reason of saying no is.

*Say they want to do something that is dangerous or not a good idea to do.  Once again as soon as you say no, they become very defensive.  So instead of starting out telling them no, I start out by giving them my reasoning of why I feel they shouldn't do it.  "We shouldn't do that because (whatever could happen or whatever the danger is)  If I am just quick to say NO NO we don't do that, they will never really understand why they shouldn't, because they weren't given an explanation.

Just by alleviating the immediate negative "NO" you can communicate your view and feelings without putting someone on the defense immediately.  I'm really not explaining this as well as my professor, but I hope you get the picture.  And by no means am I trying to stand on a soapbox, it just really has worked wonders here for us over the years, and by all the feedback and comments from others watching I think it must work.
SO, don't start out with NO or even use the word, just use your reasoning why you WOULD say no.

From her next post: First off a disclaimer I am definitely a yeller/freak outer.  If I always spoke calmly with my kids they would never know when I'm REALLY upset at what they did.  So even with all the communication stuff I definitely DO yell!

The Great Cookie Debate:

Tonight we received cookies from the "Family Home Evening" Phantom (hopefully, whomever dropped them off missed the part where I was yelling at my kids.... :)) No just kidding we hadn't started FHE yet, but the cookies were a definite motivator to start and finish!
Agenda:
Read scriptures
(surprise - Jeff was home earlier than expected - 8:30 pm)
sing songs: popcorn popping, I love to see the Temple, Sunbeam song
prayers
COOKIES!!!!!

As we're eating cookies - Lea asked for cookie #2.
Jeff: No, they're aren't enough, there are only 4 left and 5 of us.

Lea: Well, tomorrow while you're gone, I'll take one in my lunch and then they (me, Abbey and Lucas) can have the rest. (HAHA!)

Jeff: Except one problem. I want another cookie too! :)

We'll see what tomorrow has in store for the 4 remaining cookies........who will win this epic battle of dad vs. daughter.....

Camera thief (thieves?)

Once upon a time I couldn't find my camera: can you guess who found it!?

Cousins Christmas

A Sorensen Family tradition: cousins Christmas - usually occurring in July at Twin Lakes, however, can occur elsewhere should cousins not be able to attend said family event at Twin Lakes. Ages 0-18. Once age 18 is reached, you no longer get to participate. :)
Thank you Sorensen cousins for the gifts!

D-backs game

Jeff got tickets from work and we headed out to the Ball-game! We sat by a couple his co-workers and in the seats behind us were the Jones' family from our ward - in a stadium so big and with so many people - funny to sit by someone we didn't even know was going to the game. :) We had a great time at the game and the D-backs almost pulled W in the last inning, but no such luck.....put up an L in the Win/Loss column. GO D-BACKS!!

 Too wowed....(loud)

Open rooftop - a beautiful night for the game

We bring our own entertainment - coloring and cookies what could be better?!

Yesterday I heard......

"Alison! You're not pregnant anymore."

Nope, baby is now 6 weeks old. Better than hearing: "wow, you're STILL pregnant, you were so big then - are you almost done yet?!"

PTO/Site Council

Getting WAY out of my comfort zone and going to the PTO/site council meeting for Lea's school.
Parents and teachers are not getting the voice they need - time to be more involved and hopefully help to.....
MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I'm happy she has had terrific teachers, but when did it become all learn and no play.......she's in school for 7 hours, 7  HOURS a day.....with about 20 minutes of free time outside.
Her class would take a classroom bathroom break and then return to class - a small break for the kids and teacher.
Lea tells me on Monday: #1: they are no longer allowed to use the restroom - they must go before school and during those 20 minutes for lunch/recess.......according to the administration. Teachers, parents and kids DO NOT AGREE.
Apparently time for the class bathroom break was a gross (excuse the pun. :)) misuse of school time.

#2: They have no other items to play with at recess except the play structure and about 600 square feet of grass and cement.........................how BORING is that!? And the only other recess is being removed from the school day. They only get the 20 minutes at lunch time.

If you want to be more productive with the kids during the day, give them a break - she's in 2nd grade and will be in school until she graduates from college - let's not ruin her love for school in 2nd grade. I bet a break would improve their test scores=$$ for the school. Figure it out people!!!! People who are in charge and think they can do whatever they want without help from the teachers and parents.........so get involved and make school what it's supposed to be for: Teaching and learning, not politics and money.

Nieces

My nieces came to help out about week 4 after Ammon was born - they showed up 20 minutes after Grandma Judy left - thank you!!! Shayla came when Abbey was born and hung out with us, drove us around and took care of my kids while I slept - I was more than happy to have her come back!! :) This time she brought Marissa who had just graduated from high school and was currently not doing ANYTHING. They were so very helpful and I hope to return the favor some day - love you girls!

Shayla & Abbey

Marissa spent a lot of time in this chair or the couch holding Ammon or warding off other small children who wanted to use her SUPER COOL phone. Which was great because I didn't want to go anywhere either!

Noone can resist a nap with a sleeping baby. We also make good use of the pacifier.
A beautiful day to spend outside creating fun artwork.

They stayed up late, played games and listened to a random hodge podge of music - apparently us married folk went to bed too early  (10 pm.....sheesh, when did I get so old!?)

And cookies, they made lots of yummy cookies!

Marissa also spent most of her time attached to the phone on the side of her head on in her hands - I made her put it down for a quick pic. Doesn't she look much better without the phone head??

I'm the best!! hehe

My email to Jeff: (and since Jeff never reads our blog - here's my secret: my homepage for my browser was covered in information about the game, I didn't remember on my own........haha!)

Did you record the game tonight? Do you know what time it starts and what channel it might be on?

Going to the dentist in about 40 minutes....well dropping the kids off at Bundys and then going to the dentist.... can't wait. :)

-alison

Jeff's response:
I have the game set to record.
Thanks for remembering Opening day of football.
I think I might cry!  You’re the best :)

Good luck at the dentist.  Give me a call with the results.

Going to the dentist

After 5 years, it's time to head back and just in time. Yesterday a small piece of my tooth broke off (leaving a hole in my tooth) while I was chewing gum.....The last time I went to the dentist was for a root canal and post/crown to be put in. Nips are not a favorable candy of mine anymore..... I think this time around, my teeth took a beating from all the ice I consumed during the last 4 months of pregnancy. So good times I get to go back - hoping for a quick fix and no root canal this time around. BTW - I'm a horrible patient for dentists and eye doctors......sorry I just am, hate going to both of them.

First day of Preschool

It's only fair that Lucas get his moment of the first day of school. :) Starting pre-K with Miss Janna at Happy Meadows Preschool. He loves going and is happy to go as long as he can wear his big pants, cool shirt and BYU hat - shoes and socks are a must as well. He does not believe in wearing shorts or sandals......despite my protest every day to get him to wear those items. Lucas wants to be just like his dad who gets to wear pants, shoes and socks every day. Whatever, I give up - I'm just glad he loves school and loves to learn. :)

Grandma Judy's car - she was here on baby Ammon duty. :)
Big brudder and lil' sis Abbey
(Miss Janna.....why did you tell my mom to take more pictures......!?)

New song

While driving to Wickenburg yesterday for my niece Ashley's baptism, Abbey was singing this song (do you know it?)

Gingle bells,
.
.
.
all the way,
.
(intermittent humming (in tune by the way)...da da da da da)
.
.
.
.
.
HEY!

(repeat, repeat, and repeat again)
