Chateau de Versailles

Saturday of our Paris excursion, we decided to leave the comforts of Paris and head out to
and see this beyond ridiculous Palace, Estate, Smaller palaces and of course Marie Antionette's estate away from the Palace.......and miles of walking around gardens to see statues under repair, crew teams on the man-made lake which was a mile long, and perfectly trimmed trees. And this is exactly why the Palace was originally built. It was a 'refuge' from city/government life, to the country......until all your so-called friends follow you out there to party, then you build a 'smaller' palace to get away from the larger Palace. Rough life right? Well yes when the cost of the palace is more than half of the country's GDP. All the poor people run, clean, cook, decorate (because the queen's room has to be in season.....and that's just her room), care for the children, the grounds and whatever party the King is hosting. No wonder they were bitter and beheaded the King and the Queen.

So we hopped on the train and headed out to the country. We got a little hungry on the way and I pulled out some fruit leather. I handed one to Jeff and ate it no problem. The girl across the aisle had a problem though. I could see her just staring at us, trying to figure out what on earth we were eating that looked a pale green and possibly like something we scraped off the bottom of our shoes and packaged. haha - it was hilarious. I wish I would have offered her one and could understand what she was saying to the other 2 boys she was with.....too funny.

I waited in line while Jeff went to see if we could get in a shorter line with our Museum Pass - no such luck, but the line did move quickly. For good reason - this place is so huge, it would be hard to cap the number of people.
We listened to the audio guide and toured the main palace.
 a scale model before upgrades.
This is the entire property - good grief.
 King Louis the 14th
us and all of our friends. (I'm in the bottom right corner)
the balcony of the chapel where the King and his family would worship.....all others sat below and watched the King.
I ordered the LARGE door.....about a quarter of the way through the palace, I started to lose interest, we found food and I was ready for more. Guess my blood sugar was low.
the Hall of Mirrors - was said that people were so vain they wanted to look at themselves all the time.
This is where the grand parties and dances were held
 more of our friends
the War room - paintings throughout history of war
this was in the 1830 room
The Queen's room. There is a secret door off to the right where the King could enter for a night-cap when he wasn't off with some other woman. What a lovely marriage.....and she would change the decor for every season. The important things in life.
I lost track of what all the rooms were for or whom they were for.
The fountain under construction and the path to more gardens, palaces and estates and the man-made 2 mile lake in the shape of an X

Out to the palace away from the palace
 Game room
we sat down outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and relax our aching feet.

This was another small modest home (on the main floor)
pool parlor - this was Marie Antoinette's own 'home'

somebody was a little snoopy, looking through a locked door.
We didn't even see the entire place, but it was definitely an experience to be had. We saw where the Treaty of Versailles was signed - war meetings were held and amazing moments in history were had. The train we had planned to use - the track was shut down for an accident. We had to leave the station and find our way to another station.....not many English speaking and the announcement gave no direction on how to get to the next station. We hooked up with another couple from New York and made our way to the new station after asking someone who could only speak French and Portuguese - English and Spanish for us, and English and some Indian for the other couple. We made it though and bonded for that time. I gave them our Rick Steves Paris book and we ended our day at Versailles.

Stake Conference - June 1-2

I wanted to share with you what we learned this past weekend. Now before you go deleting it because you don't want to read my preachy church stuff - it was awesome! It was all about strengthening your family and keeping your home, your marriage, and yourself, safe from the evils in the world. So just read it - you might learn something too. We had the opportunity to hear from Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the 12 and a newly called area authority over South Africa - Elder Hamilton (in person!). (feedback, comments, questions, concerns are welcome, but not necessary.) :)

(I emailed this to my family and Jeff's family....some who are no longer attending the LDS church so I figured they'd just delete it without reading is - hence the above paragraph. They may still have, but I sent it anyway.)
Love you all!
Alison

I need Jeff's notes from the Priesthood session - I'll let him write that part.

From the Saturday night adult session:

Sister Chancellor of the Stake:
     - do not allow Satan to destroy our marriages
     - we cannot force our spouse to change but we can change ourselves

Elder Hamilton:
Weight bearing  beams of a righteous home are:
                  - family scripture study
                  - family prayer
                  - weekly family home evening
We will not always be safe from our adversary even in our own homes. We must protect our nestlings.

There should be no divisions among us - we should be one, unified with Christ.

Elder Ballard:
-The Savior knows of the trials of women. His first declaration of being Christ was to a women at the well; on the cross to his Mother; and to Mary when He returned as a resurrected being.
-We are never alone if we say our prayers
-Pray holding hands with your spouse at bed each night - if we do so the adversary will not be able to penetrate our defenses.
-Do not exclude Heavenly Father from our challenges - He rarely interferes, but quickly responds.

Fortify our homes: a refuge from the storm,
*** READ THIS: technology is dangerous when it begins to control us
                                                 - it can capture our minds and our spirits
                                                 - 'You are wasting your mind, you are wasting your time' - what he told his grandson who was graduated from high school and addicted to video games. The transformation of his grandson after he stopped playing video games was night and day. He excelled in school, got a job, etc. Are you wasting your time and your mind??
                                                 - If you have kids, you have trouble (even Apostles have family problems)
                                                 - DON'T TAKE YOUR PHONE TO SACRAMENT MEETING - we need to leave it in the car and step into His world for 1 hour and 10 minutes to contemplate His life and His ministry. We need to show our kids we can survive and thrive without our phones during sacrament - even it's for the scriptures. Bring your scriptures with you!
                                                - Enjoy the journey, enjoy technology - don't get captured by it.

SUNDAY Session:
President Porter - Stake President of Phoenix Stake:
Protect your home - physically and spiritually - smoke detectors and prayer can provide safety in our homes

Gird our loins with truth: each home should have the words of the prophets old and new - scriptures, Ensign, etc
                                 - every home should have 'Preach my gospel' and the Addiction Recovery book
                                 - memorize scriptures

Breastplate of righteousness - protects the heart and the sanctity of marriage

Feet shod with preparation: missionary work for all ages, prepare now; some of us may shuffle, but we still need to be prepared.

Helmet of salvation: covers the mind - protect with true knowledge of the plan of salvation

the SWORD of the Spirit: in every movie the bad guy always wants the hero to 'Drop his weapon' because then it's an unfair fight. Let us not lay down our swords and lose them in the night. We must be prepared to fight the adversary.

Sister Jarius Morales: stalactites and stalagmites cannot exist without each other - so we cannot exist without our Heavenly Father and blessings from heaven.

President Meryhew: Blessings of the Atonement are extended to all of God's Children. Family history will not only bless your ancestors, but your family now and future generations - will bond you together.

President Taylor of the Phoenix Mission: shared a story about a young boy who was a missionary at age 6. He wanted to share the gospel and started leaving candy-grams for his neighbor to be baptized. 'You'd be 'smart' to get baptized 'now' and be happy 'later'.  He also announced that the Phoenix Stake will now be part of the Tempe West? Mission. We will say good-bye a great league of missionary army to join another starting July 1.

Elder Hamilton: We are all slow converts. Every convert needs 3 things: a friend, to be nourished, and some sort of responsibility.
from President Hinckley: If you take a burning log (no matter how big or how hot the fire is), if you take a burning log off the fire, the fire will go out, the log will grow cold and will no longer give off light or heat.

Elder Ballard:
Sacrament is a sacred meeting - different from any other meeting and room in the church.

I do not wear a white shirt and tie because I have to. We do not have a uniform code in the church, but we do have a great love for the Lord. We need to be prepared to stand in for the Lord in His ordinances (saying the sacrament prayers, passing and preparing the sacrament).
(everyone stands when an Apostle or Prophet enters a room) He said, I am generally embarrassed at this attention, however, I know you are not standing for M. Russell Ballard the man, you are standing our respect for the Lord's apostle and because you love the Lord.

He called down the powers of heaven and commanded us to repent - stop pornography. (this was also done in the Priesthood session) WOW!

He gave counsel to the Youth earlier to not raise their voice to their parents, to be respectful, to be kind.
To fathers: never raise your voice, lose your temper. Do not lose your dignity of the priesthood by losing your temper. Step away, step out and then come back when you are ready to love and nurture.
To Mothers: stay under control, step outside. As the world continues to unravel, become more secular and lose sight of God, there is a penalty for living that way.Our home needs to be a REFUGE FROM THE STORM. (this is the second time he's said this......it's important!!!) Mother Eve is the greatest heroine of all.

** Homes are only as strong as their mother and father, and children who respect each other and love one another.

Louvre - The DaVinci Code - lightning round

Ending at the (Obélisque) Bastille Monument - we were crossing a busy street and trying not to get hit, so we took a quick picture and kept moving. The Tuileries Garden is directly behind the Monument - which you can see a few trees. We veered left and walked all the way around. Wouldn't seem like a big deal - except we'd been walking all day long, we were hungry and I really wanted a crepe, but wasn't wanting to stand and wait for one.......and it was 1 mile from this monument, around the Garden and to the entrance of the Louvre...........As you can see it was late at night by the time we finished our Champs-Elysee walking.

 beautiful!

Tom Hanks here we come!

To the art: Athena of Velltri
I learned 2 things about statues - most are of women. they are perfectly symmetrical. They always pose 'unbalanced' to give the body more curves and the arms are raised opposite of the feet. The human body was beautiful and women were curvy and full. So there I went all the way to Paris and learned something I probably already knew. :)
The other thing we learned is the women are usually naked, their having lavish parties with alcohol, sin, war and death. And nothing is simple. It's extremely detailed and precise and always on a large scale. I think the above picture was actually on the ceiling.
Seriously....how long would it take to paint this?!
The perfect example of the Greek theory of the perfect woman. Venus de Milo - what's awesome is this is the original!!! (130-100 BC)
and this...... the Mona Lisa. Probably one of the smallest paintings in the Louvre, but one of the most famous. There is a rope keeping us and everyone else back, then this plated glass and spotlight. We were expecting to not be able to even see it - too many people. Because we went at night an hour before close, it was empty. We walked right up, took pictures and took another couple's picture and moved on. Compared to the other extravagant paintings - this one is relatively simple and one of importance mostly because Leonardo da Vinci painted it, but it's a portrait of a Lisa Gherandini, the wife of wealthy Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo.

We wondered around for a little bit longer, but the museum was closing and out we went. We only saw one wing, but we came, we saw, we photographed, and loved every minute of it!
I was tired and my feet hurt.....beautiful night huh?
This concludes our Paris tour - next on the list:
Versailles
the Eurostar
and......London!!
